SIRENE BLUE RESORT

Under the sun

Words: James Litston

Laid-back, unpretentious Poros is a favourite escape for weekending Athenians, but this peaceful place has a far lower profile with international travellers. That may well change this summer with the revamping of Sirene Blue Luxury Beach Resort: a longstanding landmark on the island’s south coast, which has undergone a dramatic refurbishment in collaboration with Interni & Moda Bagno.

Originally opened in the 70’s, Sirene Blue has long enjoyed a reputation for excellence. The 100-room hotel, which looks across the Saronic Gulf to the Peloponnesian mainland, enjoys a prime location surrounded by nothing but pine trees and greenery. “We believe it’s the most beautiful spot on the island,” says Alex Varveris, Moda Bagno’s managing director. “The natural setting – with two private beaches – really does take your breath away.”

The collaboration began all the way back in 2009, when Sirene Blue’s owner took the decision to renovate the classic hotel and update it for a fresh new era.”We initially helped informally with the selection of materials,” explains Varveris, “but we ended up overseeing the project and overall design – with significant and insightful input from the owner, of course.”

With the overhaul now complete, Sirene Blue gleams with contemporary style. This season’s guests will find a sense of tastefully discreet luxury thanks to the renovated facilities and high-end design elements throughout the hotel. The guestrooms and suites are particularly gorgeous with their colour scheme that gently echoes the surrounding scenery: all natural woods, Aegean-blue wall tiles and quality fabrics that match the shades of the sand down on the shore. Every room has a private balcony overlooking the sea, ensuring that guests need never disconnect from those magical views.

Those same views can also be enjoyed from all the public areas, be that the main restaurant, the roof garden, the lobby bar or the chic, sea-facing pool. Uniting all these spaces is a cohesive sense of quality thanks to the furnishings and signature pieces sourced by Interni & Moda Bagno, like ….?. Adding to this is a tangible sense of exquisite attention to detail in the careful procurement and placing of houseplants, artworks and interesting objets d’art.

Wherever guests choose to linger – their balcony, the beach, the bar or the over-the-sea wooden deck – the overall theme of their stay will be of joyful relaxation. Further accentuating these serene vibes is Sirene Blue Spa, which offers stress-busting treatments and therapies that are inspired by nature. Whether enjoying a massage, sipping a cocktail or sampling Mediterranean cuisine, the focus is always on quality ingredients combined with those panoramic views.

When the time comes to leave Sirene Blue’s sanctuary and step outside in search of adventure, guests will quickly feel immersed in Poros’s step-back-in-time appeal. Sirene Blue is less than a 10-minute drive from neoclassical Poros Town, which is packed with interesting shops and tavernas. Elsewhere, the island offers pine-forest strolls, golden sands and historic attractions such as the Temple of Poseidon, not to mention Poros Town’s impressive Archaeological Museum.

But Sirene Blue is not the sort of place you’ll want to leave for long. The beach, the pool, the sense of peace and comforting, personal service will soon have guests hurrying back to their embrace. No wonder, then, that this hotel sees so many guests return year after year – even including members of the Varveris family.

“Sirene Blue Resort is truly a beloved place for us,” Alex Varveris reveals. “Staying here always evokes such emotions. Now, post-renovation, that sense is heightened all the more, with the new design respecting the architecture and adapting the spaces so that guests feel comfortable, summery, and serene. After all,” he adds, “isn’t that precisely what a holiday should provide?”
